About Beautiful Rarotonga
Rarotonga is the heart of the Cook Islands. Some say it’s ‘paradise in the Pacific’ where people embrace you with a smile and open arms. The island is only 32km in circumference and will take you about an hour to travel around it.
Avarua is the main town on the island and the commercial centre of the Cook Islands. It has a friendly, bustling atmosphere and a good selection of shops, banks, cafes and visitor facilities.
Rarotonga is dominated by mountain peaks where lush rain forests cascade to coconut-fringed shores. The island is almost completely encircled by a coral reef, which embraces the clear aqua lagoon waters and many white sandy beaches.
There are two main roads on Rarotonga - you can circle the island on the main sealed road, through the villages and past the beaches; or you can take the older inland road, which winds through local fields of taro, pawpaw, bananas and other farmlands.
